Climate Milestone

  • 2024

    - Held an online meeting with 53 major suppliers in Japan, requesting their cooperation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and sharing emission reduction information.

  • 2023

    - Sumitomo Chemical established a new index, Science-Based Contribution (SBC), to more clearly demonstrate the contribution of its products and technologies to carbon neutrality.

  • 2022

    - In March 2022, Shinhama Liquefied Natural Gas Co., Ltd. began operating the Shinhama LNG Station, replacing traditional coal or heavy oil with liquefied natural gas (LNG). In November 2022, Sumitomo Joint Electric Power Co., Ltd. began operating the Shinhama North Gas Power Plant, which it constructed using LNG. These efforts are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 650,000 tons annually.

    - Since 2015, Sumitomo Chemical has been promoting the Sumika Sustainable Solutions (SSS) initiative, which certifies products and technologies within the Sumika (Sumitomo Chemical Electronic Materials) Group that contribute to climate change mitigation and reduced environmental impact from a full product lifecycle perspective. This initiative also drives the development and adoption of these solutions. In FY2022, the number of SSS-certified products and technologies reached 66.

  • 2021

    - Formulated and announced its grand design to achieve carbon neutrality, committing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 (compared to 2020 levels) and achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

    - Since November 2021, Sumitomo Chemical’s Oita Works has switched to 100% renewable electricity, reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 20%. Additionally, at the same site, Sumitomo replaced the fuel used on-site from heavy oil to city gas with a lower CO₂ emission intensity and optimized plant operations, achieving approximately a 10% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

    - Developed an automated calculation tool to assess the CFP (carbon footprint of products) for approximately 20,000 products.
